Glasswire strings are pulled from molten silica in a single, unhurried drawing process, which makes strands so thin and uniform that they bend instead of breaking.
Mineral impurities are added on purpose: cobalt turns them blue, iron and sulfur make amber, and gold chloride gives rose, a colour the Glassmakers' Guild still disputes.
Composers write unghia cantante ("singing nail") into their scores: a fingernail drawn slowly along the string makes a faint, breathy song.
